KP Intermediate Gardening: Principles of Vegetable Plant Health

The Instructor for this class is Megan Barbour. She has over a decade of experience in building gardens and farms in a community context and currently runs FlouraFauna Farm in East Austin.

The class will split in two parts:

The first two hours will focus on what is going on below the ground in your garden. It is going to be predominantly about soil as an ecosystem with a focus on the chemistry of compost. Healthy soil is the main preventative measure against pests and disease.

In the Above Ground half of the class, Megan will illustrate and involve the class in the lessons of basic botany for gardeners, with a focus on reproduction and pollination as it relates to seed saving and healthy growth of the parts of the plant we eat. This portion will help attendees identify pests, diseases and deficiencies in their plants and understand their causes with long and short term remedies.

We want people to be well equipped with information about their garden to make good decisions as they go through a season. The workshop will be chocked full of info but we will keep things as direct and simplified as possible. The Below and Above Ground portions will be presented in chronological order over the time span of a season. We will approach the subject from an advanced novice gardener's perspective.

Water and irrigation techniques will also be touched upon.
