I know there's controversy over genetically-modified farm products in the food chain. Frankly, I haven't done enough research to formulate an opinion, but I do know that our ancestors got along just fine with the way God designed our food so I have no problem taking the safer route. So, with that being said, does anybody know where there are non-GMO seeds available? I've heard they're getting hard to come by and haven't found any on the net yet.
I decided early this year that I wanted to grow heirloom tomatoes, along with the other stuff my roommate and I are growing, and bought a seed collection from localharvest.org. They weren't listed as non-GMO but I would imagine they were since they were all true heirloom seeds and not modern hybrids. I started those from seed and also decided to buy a couple of extra starter plants at the Sunshine Garden annual plant sale in March. Once they all began producing and I had tasted them all, I began saving the seeds I want to plant next year using this method: http://faq.gardenweb.com/faq/lists/seedsave/2002084456024410.html. The one thing I learned through trial and error is that the goop on the seeds breaks down faster with constant airflow, so I use a paper towel to cover the jar instead of plastic wrap with holes in it.
Oh, and you can also find some heirloom seeds of all kinds at a bunch of the local garden stores, including Natural Gardener, Great Outdoors, and Gardens. Haven't been to Gardens yet but a friend told me that the owners go out of their way to mainly stock international varieties. Hope that helps.
