For Our Own Goods - FOOGS

I am really focusing on the food forest yard now that my garden is planted. I was speaking with a new FOOGS member, Jacob, this morning about it. He is growing a Navajo thornless blackberry that is leafing out well, but it hasn't bloomed yet. What about the rest of you. Any suggestions for me? I have a strawberry plant right now, but want blueberry, mulberry tree, blackberry, etc. I make a mean cobbler. :) I am in Austin. Thanks!

Hi Rachel, great plan. I love berries, specially strawberries and blueberries. i was researching not to long ago about blueberries and found a site that explained it all well and simply; covering when to plant in texas and how to take care of them. I hope it helps you. Take care.

How about grapes along your fenceline? Mustang grape jelly is yummy and you can try any other varietal. I also recommend some fruit trees, either in a container, such as citrus or maybe citrus or loquat?

Happy growing! :)

I was just looking up growing up strawberries last weekend. My wife really wants to try to grow some. I was thinking about trying to plant some perennials this fall. From what I have been reading, they really only produce for about 3 years with the second being the best. I settled on trying a pyramid something like this: http://thegardenerchef.com/filling-the-strawberry-beds with planting a side a year, and a filler plant for the forth year to give back to the soil. Then rotating around. I told my wife to give me a flat of strawberries for my birthday this year and we would try it out.
