In view of the present economic problems and at the request of ourstudents we, Paul Range and Gloria Haswell will present a series inpreparing for the problems ahead of us economic, natural andun-natural disasters.
These are the upcoming classes featuring the Preparedness Series.There is no requirement for attending any class to attend anotherexcept as noted. We have tried to duplicate each class so everyone canpick up a class they have missed.
Classes will be presented at the Helotes Creek Nature Center’swonderful classrooms and workshops will be at Sam Coffman’s Quarry.Aquaponic Workshop will be at Slapdash Farm in Elgin, Texas. Therewill be handouts at each class.

Aug 28 – 8:30 am - 11:30 amClass #2 Food Storage -- What food should you store and how should youstore it. Basic storage methods containers, jars, buckets, crocks andmore. Participants will take home a gallon jar. Cost $20.00
Aug 28 – 2:00 pm - 05:00pmClass #1 Basic Preparedness -- This class will cover the basics ofFood, Water, Shelter, basic disasters, why to prepare and reasons todo it. We will cover basic FEMA guidelines and other guides.Participant will receive 3 ring binder to hold class handouts. Cost$15.00
Sept 12 - 08:30 am - 11:30 amClass #3 Food Preservation -- Canning, dehydration, pickling and more.This is a lecture and demonstration class, basics of canning.Participant should bring a pint jar and ring. We will supply materialto make syrup. Prickly pear or Mesquite in season. Cost $20.00

Sept 18 – 8:00 amChicken Tractor Workshop --Participants will build chicken tractor. Atthe end of the class we will have a drawing and the winner will takeit home. This unit will house 3 chickens, which can provide eggs andmeat, fertilizer for your lawn. Cost $40.00
Sept 25 – 08:30 am - 11:30 amClass #4 Basic preparation of food. -- Class will cover cooking over afire, hobo stoves, spirit stoves, Coleman stoves etc. Participantswill take home a hobo stove. Cost $20.00

Oct 10 – 02:00 pm - 05:00pmClass #4 Basic preparation of food. -- Class will cover cooking over afire, hobo stoves, spirit stoves, Coleman stoves etc. Participantswill take home a hobo stove. Cost $20.00
Oct 16 – 02:00 pm - 05:00pmClass #8 Water -- Storage, treatment, filters, rainwater collection,wells, windmills, well drilling, dowsing. Participants will take homea set of dowsing rods. Cost $25.00
Oct 17 - 09:00 am - 11:30 amClass #6 Basic First Aid (taught by Sam Coffman). - Very Basic FirstAid class designed to familiarize the student with first aid for homeand camping. Participants will take home a first aide kit. Cost $20.00Oct 23 - 08:00 am - 05:00 pmWorkshop-- Build a 12v Wind Power Generator--Build a 12v wind powergenerator from scratch on the cheap from common parts such asalternators, PVC Sewer pipe and discarded bicycles. Students receive ablade pattern and manual to take home. Bring lunch, water and camera.This will be an 7 hour class. $75 at the quarry (quarry location)

Nov 20 -08:00 am - 05:00 pmWorkshop Aquaponics --The Aquaponics Workshop is a hands on classdesigned to thoroughly familiarize attendees with every aspect ofbuilding a 6 grow bed system from frame construction to plumbing. Thisclass was designed for someone who have never used a power saw ordrill as well as those with building experience. You will gain theknowledge of how to build a complete food system that can feed afamily of four This is an all day class as we will build a system fromstart to finish, In this class you will be sawing, drilling and doingplumbing, not to mention shoveling gravel. We will start the system upand place plants in the gravel. This unit will be up and running byclass end including a trouble shooting session on adjustments to cycletimes etc. As this is a hands on workshop please dress appropriatelyand bring gloves. Location Slapdash Farm near Elgin, Texas The cost ofthe class is $90. Attendes will receive a copy of the latest manual onthis system, plus a siphon for your dump barrel.

Evacuation daytime and nighttime, planning for afamily and pets, vehicle evacuation or walking/bus evacuation. Dinnerwill be served. Optional camping is available. Cost $25.00
Dec 5 – 08:30 am - 11:30 amWorkshop # 11 Personal Defense-- Techniques of personal defense,weapons and weapons safety class. Cost $25.00
Dec 11 - 08:30 am - 05:00 pmWorkshop Outdoor Oven -- We will build An Adobe/Cobb oven at theQuarry. Lunch and supper provided. We will not fire oven untilPrimitive cooking workshop. Overnight camping optional. Cost $40.00
Jan 8 – 08:30am - 11:30 amWorkshop Primitive Cooking -- Class at the Quarry. Cooking over woodfire with dutch oven, hobo stoves, spirit burners, camping stoves, andgrills. Outdoor oven will be used to cook bread. Lunch provided. Cost$30.00
