For Our Own Goods - FOOGS

I've gardened for years and like to plant what I call a "salsa garden"; basically anything that you can put into salsa.  My son ( a chef) added an herb garden last year and we've really enjoyed our rosemary bush, cilantro and basil as well.
My husband and I love edamame and wondered if anyone has tried growing soybeans?  I've never seen them grown or offered for sale locally but that doesn't mean we can't try!  Just wanted to see if anyone else has had any experience with them.  I'd love to be able to run out to the garden instead of the frozen food section at the local grocer.
We're renting our tiller this evening and can't wait to smell that wonderful black dirt tomorrow morning!

Welcome to you and your family, and to all those new members that are joining faster than I can keep up with. I regularly get good tips from here and anticipate more.

Soybeans are worth doing a little research on before planting. http://www.harvestwizard.com is a good general website. Good luck.
Thanks Camilo! Great link.

Cindy, you were reading my mind - love to have home grown edamame. I'm adding this to our list to plant this weekend so I'll check out Camilos link and share anything else I find out.
Camilo's link was quite helpful. The issue was finding seeds! I'd already shopped at a couple of places and called several places yesterday to no avail. I was about to settle for mail order when I found my seeds (and my new Graceland!) at the Natural Gardener yesterday afternoon. It's a gardening oasis! I strolled in and, despite a generous selection of seeds, found my edamame straight away. Unfortunately, I was under the gun on time yesterday and couldn't shop for very long. I'll be back there this weekend (after planting my seeds!). This place is amazing.

Agreed! Natural Gardener is a great resource for all things growing! :) I am talking to them about a sponsored educational program. Glad to see you shopping there...

The Natural Gardner is an excellent place to find any hard-to-find seeds. I was able to find Borage, Matt's Wild Cherry and Black Krim seeds there that I have not seen anywhere else off-line.

Their soil and compost selection makes me want to own a truck!
I was able to find seeds at my local nursery here in Dallas. I was going to plant some last year, but because life got in the way, I never really got to plant much but lettuce and herbs. This year I have it all in, including some edamame. I am looking forward to some nice dishes with the home grown goodness.

Let us know how it goes. It's been slow going for mine. I have the tendency to group "beans" into one category and regular green beans seem to sprout overnight. (Our snow peas went crazy last year!) Less than half of the seeds I planted have sprouted but one seems to emerge daily. I think I'll plant a second round this weekend regardless; extend the growing season as it were. We steamed a giant bowl of edamame last night and all I could think about was steaming "my own" in a couple of months! Good luck!

Cindy,
Can't wait to hear about your planting adventures this weekend. Maybe you could upload some photos or video of your garden?

Thanks!
Ty

Hooray, my soy has sprouted. When I checked my garden today, I had a tiny little green been poking out. Looks like I might get some homegrown this year.

KevG
Kev, very cool! Do you mind posting some pics so we can see them as they come up? Also are you stll coming down to the expo in Austin?
