Shari,

We are huge advocates of raised bed gardening!  Some people, such as Matt (shown above) create a somewhat permanent water source in their beds whereas others (such as me :)) water from bed to bed with a hose.  Some people use a drip irrigation system, which is very easy to install and others use soaker hoses.  LOTS of options as you can see.  As far as soil amendment, a lot of people talk about testing the soil, either by using a home testing kit or by taking a sample of the soil to an agriculture extension office.  I personally am too lazy to do this, so I make sure that my soil has good organic compost, good organic bedding soil and good organic fertilizer.  I also believe it is good to aerate the soil, so I mix in pea gravel or aquarium gravel or whatever I have.  I truly like raised bed gardening and container gardening better than in ground gardening, but that's just my preference.  Matt, thanks for posting the pic and inspiring Shari to try raised bed gardening! :)

I want to start raised bed gardening!  That's a clever idea to run the water line underneath!  Do move the hoses from bed to bed or does each bed have their own?  What kind of soil do you use?
