"Well, they did end up growing, just took lots longer than the other seeds. Fun to watch. I have 4 watermelons growing now, a little bigger than the size of a bocci ball. They are the small round kind, so hopefully we can harvest them soon, and…"

"I've planted more than one seed in a hole before and it wasn't a problem. Honestly watermelon is one of those I skip doing from seed and buy small plants from the nursery, they've been stronger and have done better than those…"

"Quick reply! Watermelons need lots of water (hence the name), lots of sun and good fertilization - organic nitrogen rich. They can take up to 100 days to come up. I can't speak to the AWOL seeds, but they are best planted in mounds or raised…"

Has anyone seen my watermelon sprouts?

Okay, so, I've admitted many times I don't know what I'm doing, so....expect various clueless forum calls for help....I planted my watermelon seeds maybe two weeks ago?  I planted cucumber seeds and basil seeds at the same time.  So, the cucumber are coming out and look good! About an inch big now! But no sign of the others.  I planted more than one seed in each hole, I planted 3 in each, in fact.  Could this have harmed them?--the Insecure GardenerSee More

I follow the blog "Former Chef," written by a..former chef...who gardens and who posts great recipes. Recently, she posed this question to her readers. I have to say, this is an issue that has crossed my mind, and it did give me pause. After thinking it over, this was my reply. Hope it provides you some food for thought, and I hope your gardens are happy and healthy!

So far I have spent 25 on mulch, 25 on turkey compost,…

So, this is my first blog post! Ever!

A bit of background: I live in South Austin, am married, and the mother of two great kids. I really, really, reallly, want a successful garden! I think it's so important for my kids to grow their own food. They LOVE it, too--I think all kids do; it's just natural to them. I also love how gardening can be this family activity. It feels very unifying, like you're going on an adventure together! I am passionate about health and well-being,and also… Continue
