I love finding and sharing solutions that people have created to overcome the obstacles that would otherwise keep them from providing for themselves and their families in a healthy manner. Here is a link that I was inspired to post by a new member Cristina Elizabeth Rice Savina, whose living situation requires some creative thought. Here's a great link to some urban gardening techniques. It's easier than one might think and can be fun for kids to be involved with as well! Here's the…

A while back, I was perusing the interwebs and ran across a beautiful picture of one of those hanging fruit basket sets that people put in their kitchens to keep fruit, onions, potatoes, etc. up off the counter, but still accessible and fresh. Only THIS particular basket set was wonderfully lush, with ripe, vining herbs flowing out of every tiered basket. So I became inspired and decided I wanted to do something like this at MY house. I decided to look locally for this tiered basket as I…

I really like this article because we all talk about planting, but what about when it's time to eat? Some items make it easy, like tomatoes, etc. But what about others we aren't overly familiar with, having seen most of them only in their "ready for grocery store" form? Check out this…

I like this article, and I think there are some very salient points, but, while briefly mentioned, I think they overlooked the financial/economic benefits of sustainable organics.
1. Reduce The Toxic Load: Keep Chemicals Out of the Air, Water, Soil and our Bodies
Buying organic food promotes a less toxic environment for all living things. With only 0.5 percent of crop and pasture land in organic, according to USDA that leaves 99.5 percent of farm acres…

So this is Day two with the FOOGS RV (pictures to follow soon, I promise!). I would have posted yesterday, but I have never driven an RV, so the majority of Day 1 was getting the thing outfitted with provisions, getting kids settled, getting used to driving it, etc. Now it's time to get on the road after spending the night in Pendleton, Oregon. I wish that I had gotten here Friday, because they have a
Farmer's Market on Fridays that looks…

Wow! What a wonderful day I had yesterday at the
Santa Fe Farmers Market. Not only is Santa Fe one of my favorite cities, but the farmers market they have put together is just fantastic! They have outdoor and indoor areas, both of which are stationed by MANY local farmers and artisans. I am excited to have captured quite a
bit of content including pictures and videos
, which I…

People ask me what FOOGS.org is about, what we do and why we exist, The reason that I started FOOGS originally was for my kids to see where their food comes from, get them gardening and help them establish a connection to their food source. I extended it with my personal life mission which is the following:
"To help people increase their quality of life by showing them how to work with the Earth to provide for themselves and their families."… Continue

So I have moved into my new little house in Central Austin, TX and the yard is very interesting. There isn't really a backyard; more of a front and side yard, but still plenty of space to garden, especially by the detached garage where there is a CRAZY amount of wildflower and heavily flowering plant selection.
This weekend I will start 'deconstructing' the yard and as I do, I will post video and pictures to show what I go through to create a wonderful garden and outdoor living space…

We have all been impacted one way or another by the Winter snow that has covered the US. Some areas have seen more than others. Many places have had school closings with consequences that most of us wouldn't anticipate: Hungry Students. I am fortunate that my skill set, work ethic and educational opportunities have afforded my kids and me a place to live where hunger is not a concern. So perhaps I was being naive when I was surprised by the following story about kids going hungry due to the…

Get Free Seeds for Your Garden
Tip submitted by: janice urffer on tiphero.com
Wintersown is a website that offers free seeds for the cost of a SASE and two stamps. If you go to their website you can get the details. I sent for them and you can a lot of seeds for the stamps. They also have a seed sharing program. It's worth the stamps.

Well, its been a while since I've posted. Between travel, work, FOOGS development and kids, I have been very busy. BUT with all that on my mind, I thought today that in honor of kids going back to school, I would post and write about a couple of resources that speak to change for the better regarding the quality of school food that our kids eat.

Hi Everyone!
You may have noticed the logo change! This is one of three we are trying on for size. I think I'll leave each of them up for a little while then change it. Actually, I don't think #3 is going to make it, but I'll post it and let you all decide!
What an amazing week it has been for FOOGS. In just three and 1/2 weeks since we launched this site we hit 40 members tonight and have representation in many different states. Let's see, I think so far we…

Ok, I just got back from the local "Home Improvement Big Box Store", which unfortunately didn't have any decent Fall vegetable seeds, which is definitely frustrating. This is one of the many reasons it makes sense to patronize local owners (the mission of this site!!). But sometimes you can't do that (like when one has three kids, the local store is closed and one has to leave on a business trip the next day). It's definitely a bummer, but if you need to work on the garden, you need to work on…
