For Our Own Goods - FOOGS

Well, here in Austin, Texas like other places, we are worried about this Amazing heat wave but I have to say I am excited about the fact that in spite of the oven-like heat, not only are the tomatoes producing well (albeit a little slower), but the plants themselves are also continuing to grow. We also have Melon (no pun) and Squash coming up, seemingly out of nowhere. I have a bed I was going to completely turn, but I think I'll likely try to plant some potatoes and corn, just to see how they do. It's a little late for planting, but what the heck. I'm going to see if I can buck the conventional wisdom. I think the potatoes will do it, the corn I'm a little less sure of :)

I'm feeling like going into experiment mode. What with this heat, I'd rather stay OUT of the kitchen, so I have been researching solar ovens and while there are some really good ones for sale, such as this one by the Solar Oven Society - http://www.solarovens.org. I think I'm going to try my hand at it and involve the kids this weekend. The problem is, there are soooo many other thing to do, something's gotta give. Ugh!

I want to say Thanks to everyone for the enthusiasm and support you are giving Foogs. As it might make sense to say, while I have every intention of making this an internationally recognized resource to support self-sustenance, this site is only going to be as successful as its members, so PLEASE become involved, use this as a place to ask questions, etc, and I know we can have a really great online community.
