Hi Rachel,

GLOBAL TRANSITION IN ACTION has added your 'Growing Citrus in Central Texas' to our collection of new, clever, and higher-order ideas for re-use by other localities globally. Great idea! It's now posted to the news feeds on approximately 260 websites, including Twitter and Facebook.

You can read more about the intentions of GTIA -- http://transitioninaction.com/forum/topics/global-transition-in-action

Good luck with your event! We hope your work serves as a model for locals everywhere.

Hi Rachel!  I was talking to Debbie the other day about gardening & she told me to check out your website.  Can't wait to look into it some more & can't wait to start gardening.  I feel the same way about winter.  But then when it passes I wonder why I didn't go out there & at least cover some plants during the freeze.  Oh well!

Thanks for the welcome! Tacoma is a nice place to grow...even if we are still holding our breath that the warm weather will hold for a few more days. Wild Blackberries, and a huge city-sponsored Blueberry Park... Looking forward to freezing berries, and making jam and syrup this year!

most of my experience is with a desert climate so anything other than desert based gardening would be great, if anyone has any questions for me about how to raise pretty much any plant in the desert please let me know. I have solutions for pretty much any problem caused by too much direct sun, poor dry clay or sand soil, water burns, and pest control. starting a rose and veggie garden in a rock patch will teach you a lot quickly. LOL :)

Now that is a great idea! We live in the ideal place to take a field trip for farming. Here is the link to our Facebook Fanpage. Video that tours our farm! http://www.facebook.com/pages/Monteverde-Costa-Rica/The-Common-Cup-Community-Coffee-House-and-Roastery/400967337008?ref=ts

We just had some roasted corn and zuchinni from the garden last nite. I am undergoing treatments right now so I don't plan ahead too much. My friend will probably come over to help us with canning when we need to store extra. So far I shared with co-workers and today one co-worker from another office brought some little tomatoes--they were good. It would seem those might be easier to grow. I'll follow along for now.

tomatillos, obviously, make a great salsa. charred, then pureed with some charred tomatoes and jalapenos, cilantro, etc...
also make a great ceviche addition--their acidity will add depth to any ceviche base.
raw, amazing.

and so on

Hi There, I'm looking for volunteers to help out with the community garden s at east Rural Community Center in Manor. The senior's beds are up and growing but the elderly folks could use a little help and expertise. The seniors are at the center Mon, Wed & Fri. Simply tasks like helping them drag the hose from the faucet, weed identification, pests. They are so happy to have gardens it is really fun. Old folks know stuff. You may contact me at 278-1611 or manager@manorfarmersmarket.org. Thanks, Denis

Speaking of vines, I'd like to try a Spanish Black grape vine (aka Le Noir?). I've heard they're ideal for our climate and make good wines and jellies. Haven't found any in the local nurseries, let me know if you see any around.

Gosh, you asked me too quick. I don't remember. I bought one plant at the Westview Nursery on 84 last Fall. (I live between Waco and McGregor.) I really should figure out the type and write it down so I don't forget. It's about two feet high and blooming well this spring. I'll try to post a picture. I know you're supposed to pull the blooms off the first year so it puts its energy into growing and getting well established instead of making fruit. But I just can't bring myself to do it. I do remember the type of blackberry I bought. It's a Navajo thornless. Leafing out well, but it hasn't bloomed yet.
