Sick Seedlings

Posted on March 6, 2010 at 10:05pm 6 Comments

Like last year, my roommate and I bought a variety of heirloom tomato seeds and successfully sprouted most of them about 7 weeks ago. A lot of effort was put into giving them adequate light. Most were under grow light fluorescents just a few inches above them and some were under an incandescent grow light.

We tried to gradually introduce them to the sun outside, but it's been too cold for the most of the time. I understand it needs to be above 65 degrees at the sprout…

Rescued Plant Update

Posted on January 22, 2010 at 9:35am 2 Comments

This is just a further update in my roommate's and my experiment with carrying vegetable plants over to the next year, particularly tomatoes.

A couple of varieties, particularly the Romas, were dry… Continue

I am learning a lot about winter gardens in Austin, and freeze-resistant plants like swiss chard, collards, broccoli and many others, that actually seem to thrive in the winter here. Elsewhere I posted a picture of a bowl of swiss chard picked yesterday.

2009's tomato plants, dug up and transferred to pots, have survived, and a couple of the Brandywine plants have even produced new tomatoes. So far though, the winter tomatoes, partially ripened indoors, are not as flavorful. I think… Continue

Defying the Freeze

Posted on December 5, 2009 at 9:16am 4 Comments

There was plenty of warning from the weather service this time of a significant freeze last night. With heirloom tomato plants finally producing numerous green tomatoes after being nursed through a brutal summer, my roommate and I weren't about to lose them suddenly one night to an early frost.

What to do was the question. We called someone at The Natural Gardner who suggested covering them with a material that would keep them seven degrees above the air temperature. But there could… Continue
