Permaculture....is Rache just making up words again?

I confess... I am a nerd. If someone asks me what something is, especially while I have internet access, I may pull the old "let me Google that for you" trick. The truth is, the very first time I heard the word permaculture was only a few short months ago. Oh the rush of excitement... to learn a new word!! One so new even my spell check doesn't recognize it.

In short, permaculture is a term coined by Australians…

The GREAT Outdoors and the Children

I love kids. As a young girl, I wanted to have 6 children, load us all into a van and travel around the country singing and dancing when I grew up. I also wanted to be President, an astronaut and Wonder Woman.

The education portion of what we are doing at FOOGS.org is so important to me, especially when it comes to educating the kids. I have been researching and ran across the National Wildlife Federation website and their Get Outside- Be Out There initiative. They have a GREAT site… Continue

Harlingen Farmers Market - Harlingen, Texas

For those of you that do not know, I am a Valley girl. No, not that Valley, the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. My paternal grandparent visited the RGV as Winter Texans, referred to affectionately as snowbirds. They decided to leave behind the harsh winters of Michigan to make the lush and fertile area at the Southern most tip of Texas their home. My grandfather, in particular, marveled at the year around growing season and the lovely moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. Some of their adult… Continue

Composting...Do you do it?

Visted a friend who does composting and really raves about the benefits. I read this article and got some good ideas. I was just curious how many people out there are doing it? http://www.gardeningblog.net/2009/10/21/san-franciscos-new-composting-law/

I would be excited to get your thoughts/ideas. - Rache

Composting Tips

Some great little tips from one of my favorite sites. http://www.composting101.com

1. Grass clippings add necessary nitrogen to a compost pile, but be sure

to mix with the "brown" materials that add carbon. Both are necessary

for quick decomposition and rich compost. Piles made up of just grass

will compact, slow down and start to stink.

2. Do not compost fats, pet droppings, or animal products. They will attract… Continue
