caring for the land -- soil, water, and junipers

I, too, am bummed that I couldn't make the talk. I have been working on soil and water restoration on our land and I sure would welcome any help or insight. I highly recommend the series even though I have missed most of them.

Is there contact info for the speaker? And is there contact info for Dick Pierce?

Arthur L: did you happen to make it down there and might you want to send me any important permaculture tips/rules/etc that stand out? I use log berms (mostly juniper) to lessen erosion and it is working; terraces are beginning to build up nicely. They will be garden areas soon.

Also, thinning the cedar (juniper) is beginning to have an effect; groundwater stays on the property a lot longer and I can tell that we, too, might get some springs on the property. (look at http://www.BambergerRanch.org for a good website). We have lots of new seeps, since much of our runoff is now underground in lots of places, and is therefore slowed down tremendously (ie spread out over more time).

A little more on cedar. and this is for the trellis/upright tomatos discussion: I read in the last couple of days that it can take up to 6 years for the cedar wood to be denatured enough to garden on or around -- but this was on a blog and not necessarily scientific. What the fellow had done was take out cedar as woodland management and mulched it to build up the ground. He was willing to wait before replanting. I am hoping that the wood is not only good for trellises but also for containing raised beds and terraces.

Does anyone know more about these things? Anybody who can, please do write. It can be direct.

The trees are called Eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana, mostly east of Austin) and Ashe or blueberry juniper (Juniperus ashei, mostly west of Austin) or just plain "cedar," but are not cedars at all.
