For Our Own Goods - FOOGS

Hi, Folks,

I just read this article and would like to share the link with you. In an indirect way, it is about us and what we are trying to do, but doesn't address at all the issue that brought me to FOOGS, and I guess I've assumed that the safety and nutritive value of our current food supply was the main issue both here locally and overall across the nation (world?).

Now knowing a little more about the the reasons people have for joining the grow-your-own movement, I would like to relate a little of my comings and goings this past spring and summer. I am still (surprisingly) on the road most of the time, and likely to be (disappointingly so) for another not-yet-determined timeframe. Perhaps I can settle down in winter and get next year's garden started.

So my garden didn't do well at all; the only thing I have harvested regularly (1-2X a month) are cherry tomatoes, and they have been delicious. I have been lucky and harvested about 5 of the regular tomatoes (no yellow ones), the latest 2 today. They travel well and I am glad someone is getting the rest (be it wildlife or neighbors). I am hoping to get the chance to try to grow tomatoes year-round, building a greenhouse if time permits.

Back to the underlying issue: I was very ill for a week and was already back to work before I learned about the outbreak and egg recall that had then just been announced (I heard about it on the 19th or so). Somewhere on my travels, I picked up the salmonella bug, came home for a couple of days rest and get better and that stretched out to eight before I could start up again. I lost a lot of weight and those of you who know me know that is one thing I can't afford.

Know your farmer! Being a locavore is harder on the road, but I can say that the farmer's market thing is really growing, as is the FOOGS membership! I don't log on often but each time I am really impressed by the way the word is spreading and the incredible growth. I'm sure you expected it, Ty, and again, I am duly impressed. And encouraged. I hope to hear from y'all, and I look forward to being more active again.

On a more upbeat note, there is a new movie, called Fresh, that is out and well worth watching and passing on to folks, although those who have been interested and concerned for a while will see some repetition and new footage of some key players on the national scene.
