For Our Own Goods - FOOGS

The Austin Chronicle is like the Foogs website -- I don't access it often enough.  So I was both surprised and pleased to find this article "Local Is As Local Does" in the latest issue.

Surprised and pleased to see yet another entry in the "Everybody is getting in on this . . ."  movement, but not surprised that people have found a way to make even the word "local" controversial.

This is similar to the way organic farmers seemingly have lost control of the word, which only needs trademarking for it to become meaningless, and is painfully illustrative of the fact that the profit motive is still the driving force.  Not a good thing when it comes to what we put in our bellies, or our children's bellies.

But it is heartening to see that the movement grows stronger and stronger (is "movement" the appropriate word??).  It is getting easier to eat well and to eat better than ever, and I especially commend all you gardeners out there.  There will never be anything more local than your own backyard (or front yard in some cases, "side" yards, patios and even windows).

Later I will post my "waiting on spring" photos -- I left the camera in Baytown.  Thanks to all, especially Ty for getting this dialogue started, and to all members who are spreading the word and bringing new people in all the time.  I am looking forward to catching up on all the posts and photos.

Only two things that money can't buy,

that's true love and homegrown tomatoes. . .

(credit goes to Guy Clark for that one)
