Local Foods

The Austin Chronicle is like the Foogs website -- I don't access it often enough.  So I was both surprised and pleased to find this article "Local Is As Local Does" in the latest issue.

Surprised and pleased to see yet another entry in the "Everybody is getting in on this . . ."  movement, but not surprised that…

Urban farmers and locavores

Hi, Folks,

I just read this article and would like to share the link with you. In an indirect way, it is about us and what we are trying to do, but doesn't address at all the issue that brought me to FOOGS, and I guess I've assumed that the safety and nutritive value of our current food supply was the main issue both here locally and overall across the nation (world?).…

caring for the land -- soil, water, and junipers

I, too, am bummed that I couldn't make the talk. I have been working on soil and water restoration on our land and I sure would welcome any help or insight. I highly recommend the series even though I have missed most of them.

Is there contact info for the speaker? And is there contact info for Dick Pierce?

Arthur L: did you happen to make it down there and might you want to send me any important permaculture tips/rules/etc that stand out? I use log berms (mostly juniper)… Continue

winter garden

I am writing this to add to the winter garden discussion that was up when I first started reading this blog. I am posting a photo that shows how I've grown winter vegetables indoors. I like 5 gallon buckets because they are sturdier and easier to move than regular plant pots and I start the plants in the bucket to avoid problems with transplants. And as the photo shows I actually switched to the square buckets (delis and restaurants, mayo, etc) because they are slightly smaller, therefore… Continue

sustainability

I like what I am seeing and learning and it is good to see the energy and interest spreading.

The local kids (in the 3rd-6th grade range) are studying Sustainable Cultures every semester last couple of years, set in a different era and place each time. There are guest teachers on occasion and I have had the honor/pleasure of guesting once. My overall comment, to the kids as well as the teachers, has been that the setting is never here-and-now in America. I think it's time to change… Continue

permaculture photos

Hello, group --

Rachel, I just saw your photos of the permaculture group and am wondering where and when this met; or is it an on-going thing?

I have another website and info for anyone interested in a full-out permaculture course. Again, this is from my friend Amanda at Catalyst for Fun, and this is late in that it started last week. Perhaps some of you are taking part??

I would like any feedback any one can give on permaculture courses they have taken or know… Continue

safer eating

I would like to share this link with everybody:

http://www.grist.org/article/2010-01-28-michael-pollan-sets-food-rules-on-oprah/

it is a short video from Oprah's show -- not a show I watch -- that features Michael Pollan, the author of The Omnivore's Dilemma. The show was probably a good one, at one point they show Food Rule #27 in the background. I would watch the episode if I… Continue

Citizen Gardener

Hey, everyone --

I thought I saw a reference to Citizen Gardener yesterday and now I can't find it. My friend Amanda at catalystforfun.com sent me info in her newsletter about Citizen Gardener classes starting this Saturday, January 30th. Unfortunately I don't get home until Sunday and I don't know yet if I can go to 2 out of 3 (since I will miss the first). But they are probably on-going or in rotation. Does anyone know? I'm sure it is a great resource that I am only now finding out… Continue
