AccessibleVegetables at Downtown Farmer's Market

Hi FOOGS,

A friend shared a link to this great group of folks concerned and doing things to make fresh, healthy food more readily available and understood.

Last Spring, I initiated a movement called AccessibleVegetables. It's a movement that is "too simple to fail". I invite you to visit my blogsite: AccessibleVegetables.com. AV is also on Facebook and would like to be watered with more LIKES!

Tomorrow, Sat. Sept. 18th, I will…

On the road (again) - Tales from the local food trail!

So this is Day two with the FOOGS RV (pictures to follow soon, I promise!). I would have posted yesterday, but I have never driven an RV, so the majority of Day 1 was getting the thing outfitted with provisions, getting kids settled, getting used to driving it, etc. Now it's time to get on the road after spending the night in Pendleton, Oregon. I wish that I had gotten here Friday, because they have a Farmer's Market on Fridays that looks… Continue

Local Food and Friends everywhere I go! Thoughts from Santa Fe, New Mexico.....

Wow! What a wonderful day I had yesterday at the Santa Fe Farmers Market. Not only is Santa Fe one of my favorite cities, but the farmers market they have put together is just fantastic! They have outdoor and indoor areas, both of which are stationed by MANY local farmers and artisans. I am excited to have captured quite a bit of content including pictures and videos, which I… Continue

Urban farmers and locavores

Hi, Folks,

I just read this article and would like to share the link with you. In an indirect way, it is about us and what we are trying to do, but doesn't address at all the issue that brought me to FOOGS, and I guess I've assumed that the safety and nutritive value of our current food supply was the main issue both here locally and overall across the nation (world?).…

"Why FOOGS Again?"

People ask me what FOOGS.org is about, what we do and why we exist, The reason that I started FOOGS originally was for my kids to see where their food comes from, get them gardening and help them establish a connection to their food source. I extended it with my personal life mission which is the following:

"To help people increase their quality of life by showing them how to work with the Earth to provide for themselves and their families."… Continue

Too excited not to share!

Yeah, okay, okay...so it's still too early to be expecting the carrots to be ready. But, given that this is the first time I've actually gotten carrots to sprout let alone grow, this has been an exciting and curious time for me and my 5 year old daughter, Samantha. Carrots aren't the only thing we've got growing, but they seem to have captivated her beyond imagination, especially the rainbow patch we have planted. Hopefully, all that thinning in that little patch, didn't thin out the… Continue

Mid-July Garden update

The camera is still down, but the garden is coming out with a vengeance, despite the lack of press coverage:) The squash is especially loving the recent hot weather, unlike the peas, who are struggling... We're still getting handfuls of snow peas every day, and the tomatoes (whoohoo!) are not just flowering, but we have our first tiny tomatoes on at least a couple of the plants I put in as starts Rather unexpectedly, the topsy turvy tomato planters, with two plants in each, are doing so much… Continue

Changes and new gardening experiences!

So I have moved into my new little house in Central Austin, TX and the yard is very interesting. There isn't really a backyard; more of a front and side yard, but still plenty of space to garden, especially by the detached garage where there is a CRAZY amount of wildflower and heavily flowering plant selection.

This weekend I will start 'deconstructing' the yard and as I do, I will post video and pictures to show what I go through to create a wonderful garden and outdoor living space… Continue

Harvesting the Urban Fruit Forest

When I first heard the words "fruit forest" it made me think of some fairy-filled magical land with the branches of the trees bowing, heavy with fruit. Magical and wonderful. Kind of how I remember my grandpa Butler's garden. It was filled with orange, grapefruit, loquat, kumquat, banana, papaya and mulberry trees. I'm sure I've missed a tree or two in there somewhere...oh yeah, peach.

Now, as an adult, I sometimes get strange looks when I stop by a mulberry tree on Ladybird Lake (Town… Continue

The following link is a video showing acts of cruelty in an egg farm, it will be disturbing, heartbreaking, maddening,..... I myself could not watch even a minute of it.
