Gardening by Phases of the Moon - Full Moon Alert!

I love getting to know gardeners; whether novice or generational, they all have their little tricks of the trade. I remember my Grandma Garcia's tricks for rooting avocado seeds, toothpicks, correct positioning on her window sill and honestly...nearly stagnant water. In my permaculture class, one of the students was incorporating moonlight into her flow diagram. A flow diagram is charting movement over your land, water, soil, animals, sunlight and in this case moonlight.…

My first blog post....

So, this is my first blog post! Ever!

A bit of background: I live in South Austin, am married, and the mother of two great kids. I really, really, reallly, want a successful garden! I think it's so important for my kids to grow their own food. They LOVE it, too--I think all kids do; it's just natural to them. I also love how gardening can be this family activity. It feels very unifying, like you're going on an adventure together! I am passionate about health and well-being,and also… Continue

caring for the land -- soil, water, and junipers

I, too, am bummed that I couldn't make the talk. I have been working on soil and water restoration on our land and I sure would welcome any help or insight. I highly recommend the series even though I have missed most of them.

Is there contact info for the speaker? And is there contact info for Dick Pierce?

Arthur L: did you happen to make it down there and might you want to send me any important permaculture tips/rules/etc that stand out? I use log berms (mostly juniper)… Continue

Bio Dynamic Farming- What is it?

I was in permaculture class on Saturday and I heard the term BioDynamic Farming for the first time, so I wanted to do a little research. Biodynamic agriculture is a method of organic farming with homeopathic composts that treats farms as unified and individual organisms, emphasizing balancing the holistic development and interrelationship of the soil, plants, animals as a self-nourishing system without external inputs insofar as this… Continue

Sick Seedlings

Like last year, my roommate and I bought a variety of heirloom tomato seeds and successfully sprouted most of them about 7 weeks ago. A lot of effort was put into giving them adequate light. Most were under grow light fluorescents just a few inches above them and some were under an incandescent grow light.

We tried to gradually introduce them to the sun outside, but it's been too cold for the most of the time. I understand it needs to be above 65 degrees at the sprout…
